Default [Fixed] OS Install problems in Barebones Systems

Hey all! I’ve got a dilemma. Wonder if anyone can help me. I bought a barebones pc, put it all together, everything is where it should be. Go to install OS, blue screen of death. Stop: OxOOOOOO7B (OxF888F524, OxCOOOOO34, OxOOOOOOOO, OxOOOOOOOO). Ok, I’m done. My knowledge base is exceeded. Off it goes to the shop. I’m told that the only way to get the OS installed is to buy the full version of Win XP. Ok, I bought it, they installed it. I get my system back, and a couple days later I find that I have a faulty drive. I buy a new drive, take out the faulty drive and install the new. I go to put the OS on the new drive…..blue screen of death.

I guess my first question is:
Why can’t I install onto a new drive? Obviously the BIOS is all set if I had an OS on the PC prior to this. I was told by the tech. that this full version XP will solve my problems with installation. Is there something that needs to be done to a new sata drive before install? I didn’t think sata HD’s had jumpers. I even tried to ghost the OS from the faulty drive to the new drive, but it will not boot up. It’s like something needs to be done to the drive before I begin.

Here's a brief breakdown of my system:

Intel Pentium D 940 3.20GHz / 4MB Cache / 800MHz FSB / Dual-Core / Presler / OEM / Socket 775 / Processor

Intel D945GCCRL Intel Socket 775 MicroATX Motherboard / Audio / Video / PCI Express / 10/100 Ethernet LAN / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA

Ultra 512MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz Memory

Maxtor 80GB Serial ATA HD 7200/8MB/SATA-3

Someone please help me, my two brain cells are maxed out!!

Thanks in advance!

You have to get into the BIOS... to check what is listed under Boot
You MUST use arrow keys to navigate in bios(mouse will not function)-- ususally, depending on what chipset you are running --you reboot/when you hit the "black screen" start tapping the 'delete' button ...you should see a screen saying entering setup...sometimes it's F8 key... it varies.

Anyhow-- once in the BIOS use the right arrow key/navigate to the boot section/ hit enter/ you should see a listing for "first boot device"/scroll down/ hit enter/ when you see the list you should be able to change the 1st boot listing to your CD-ROM drive.

To exit the BIOS hit F10... usually brings up a small window saying "save changes and exit?" be sure to select YES.

NOW reboot with your disc in the drive
you should see "hit any key to boot from CD"
IF this works-- it should... Once you have installed-- you should re-enter the BIOS and reverse the changes--
If it does not there is another issue-- and I'd be on the phone-- even barebones should operate correctly brand-new

Thank you for your reply,

I took the system to the shop, and I ended up having to buy the full version of XP for them to get the OS installed. I would still be using the system but, the HD they installed the OS on started sounding like an old John Deere two cylinder tractor. That is why I purchased a new drive, and I am having a dickens of a time getting the OS on it.

What I don't understand is that the defective HD came out of this very same pc, so everything must be configured in the bios already for the system to run. The system ran very well with the exception of the noisy drive.

When I go to install, (it does boot first from the cd rom), setup will create a partition, format and add files for the installation of Windows. It then restarts the computer, I see the Windows logo and the blue scroller, and then it goes to the blue screen and stop code. I can't seem to get by this.

I called the shop that did the install on the first drive and asked them how they managed to get the OS to install, they said they can't tell me, I would have to bring it in. More money. I am so lost.

One thing you must understand first... as soon as you open the case-- you own this PC --we can and will fix it but it may be tougher than we think at first... when I say you own it -- it's because almost no maker woulf take a returned unit that had been worked on by it's owner.

The first one... 7B
indicates an "inaccessible boot device" which, to me, either means a BIOS setting is not correct (irregardless of what the shop did) --or a poorly-seated cable. There is usually an "SATA controller" on the motherboard-- if that cable is not in there tight the signal won't reach the controller and the drive won't be recognized -- I do NOT mean to force it in--but it might be a good idea to unplug the cables @ both ends-- check carefully with a strong light source for any bent pins-- if you don't see any --fine ... leave it alone. Then carefully reseat the cables and try rebooting.

At this point I would still suggest checking the BIOS-- I had problems at first --getting SATA 1 drives to be recognized by XP-- why I have no clue... it seems it was an issue with some BIOS programs/chips-- because some newer boards have a special section hard-coded into the bios for SATA configuration.
I just out-stubborned it... I kept trying until I got it to work. Playing with settings I finally --and quite accidentally-- got it to work.

It also makes it more interesting that Seagate recently bought Maxtor-- both good makers but ... who was this drive actually built by ??
