Have you thought to test the memory (sorry, i'm too lazy to read through the whole 8 pages of this thread ) - you can test it with Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic
Hello GaRHaR,

I guess what I was inquiring about is that the system is running right now, as a matter of fact I'm writing this post on it. So my question is: Wouldn't things be set for an OS as it sits right now, knowing that there is an Os operating on it already. The only change I'm going to make is a different HD. I'ts going to be an SATA drive (the same as the drive thats in there right now), just a different maker of the drive. I'm going from a Hitachi to a Maxtor.
Other than that the system itself seems to run very well.

Thank you, Valis.
Maybe with a little more knowledge, I would like to apply for a staff position.

Thanks bills,
Being a permanent member is what I was refering to, BUT, maybe someday I could possibly be worthy of a title of greater valor!
I have always loved to tinker with PC's. I have two brothers that are computer administrators, one is a Unix, and one is a Linux. They are the ones that got me interested in PC's back in the mid 1990's when they gave me a 486DX for a Christmas present. I eventually wanted to upgrade, and they told me that I would have to do the work on it. It was then that I got hooked. I started studying an A+ Cert. Manual, which I got pretty far into, but my job at the present time didn't allow me to continue due to lack of free time. So, I just do whatever I can here, untill I get in over my head like now!!
Anyway, I didn't mean to tell you my life story!! This is a Forum that I will really enjoy!!

Hey all, I don’t mean to be a pain, but I still have questions about this OS situation. You know, I still cannot use the new system that I built!!
I had talked about the defective Hitachi drive. Well, just for giggles, I thought I would try to reinstall on that drive before I had to send it back for replacement. Went through with no problems at all. But, when I try to install on the new Maxtor I just bought, no dice.

I tried the memtest, don’t know what happened, but this is what I came up with:

Do you think I may have Memory problems because of this error, or do you think the test didn’t copy on the floppy right? Not sure of where to go from here. I still cannot figure out why the OS installed on the Hitachi drive with no problem, but is a no-go on the new Maxtor?

I would try another floppy-- make sure it's a clean one --nothing on it
format it-- when you do check "create a bootable floppy disc"
then install memtest.
Bad floppies are common-- why they were replaced with CD-- but I have had floppies save my bacon when I could not get CD to work --no matter what I did.

Bad RAM can cause all kinds of really weird errors-- it would be nice if you had another PC to test your memtest install before you test this machine-- to make sure the disc is correctly functioning.
If it runs on the other one-- and not the new one-- I'd say there's a hardware issue. Whether Memtest can actually say "it's the RAM" or "it's the Motherboard" I don't know.

PS-- I have subscribed to this thread so I'll be alerted when you post.

Thanks for the reply bills,

I will try the floppy on the kids puter tonite. I started this project just to see if I could do it, BIG SURPRISE!! I never had a problem with IDE drives, just partition, format and install the OS. SATA drives are a little more complicated. This is definately a serious learning experience for me. Frustrating, yet fulfilling!!
I will keep you posted. Thanks again!
