Default [Answered] What should my page file be?

Hi all, I have 2gb of RAM and yesterday I disabled the page file after following a tweak from iB::Topic::tweak for 2gb users
However I would like to put it back as it was but when I custom size, no values were automatically entered for initial and maximum size, as I thought they might have been.
So I looked at my dads computer which also has 2gb of ram and his initial size was 2046 and maximum was 4029.
So i've made this mine and would just like to check if this is correct
Here is a screenshot of what it currently reads

Thanks for your time
Matt

Hi Cowburn.

Keep in mind I'm still using XP but this should be worth a try anyway.

I recommend setting your initial size and the maximum size both to 2048.

This gives you a pretty sizeable page file and it's also a static size which helps prevent fragmentation caused by the PF resizing itself all the time.

But really keep in mind that Vista requires a lot more memory so you may want to try higher values. Either way I stick to my recommendation of setting the initial and maximum size to the same value.

In my brief foray with Vista, I never really got around to messing with my PF but regardless my machine didn't really like it that much. I figured a machine that can run Doom3 fairly smoothly should be able to run an operating system without chugging lol.

I am actually using windows xp, it's probably my theme which you are noticing, sorry for the confusion
So even though it's xp, you still recommend keeping them both at 2048?

Hi Cowburn,

That guide isn't very acurate if they tell you to turn the page file off...
I myself have a hard drive dedicated to it

Anyway - the minimum amount your page file should be, is the max amount of ram you have...

The max is whatever you want really.

Sorry to but in DAR

actually, I believe the minimum for a page file should be 1.5 the ram onboard. The max is up to you, but you need to know that the page file is the hd, and is sssslllllooooooowwwww........

I had a cat here (work) wanted to put an external usb hd and use it exclusively for his page file. I explained to him that yes, he could most certainly do that, but no, it would actually be loads slower than what he currently had (6 gigs reserved with 3 gigs ram). He would NOT believe me, don't think he had ever heard of the fsb, but put it in, and darned if the machine didn't use all the memory it could, and just crawled along.......
