Default Newly formatted 500mhz computer running REALLY slow! 512mb ram!

Hi everyone,
I just installed new (from 128-512mb) RAM into my 500mhz computer ('99 Compaq) that I use primarily as a file server. However, my computer is absolutely slower than it was prior to the reformat. Before, I was using XP Pro, now it's running on XP Home. Firefox is definitely slower than before...

In particular, if I ever try to view video on this computer (multiple file types, latest codecs installed), the video is very choppy, and SLOW MOTION! This is something I've never seen before...I've tried multiple different media players to the same effect.

The ONLY differences before reformat and now (other than RAM) are:
-PCI wi-fi card
-250gb HD #2 (OS is running off the original 10gb HD)

I've already done all the "tricks" to optimize XP to no avail. On my OS HD, I ONLY have windows and maybe 300mb of other files on it...I am not running ANY programs off the 250gb hd.

I'd be much obliged if anyone has run into a similar situation and has any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!
Shani

Hi Shani10k.

Did you make sure to install all your chipset and video drivers?

another thing...my computer never sounds like it's actually working hard. Things are moving slowly (video, firefox, etc), but my processor at no point is running even close to full steam (judging by the lack of constant sound from it).
Thought that might be importants.
Thanks!

The sound is from the fan, not the processor, which would mean it isn't getting too hot, which is a good thing. 500MHz processing power is quite low nowadays, as is 512MB RAM.
