Default XP Shutsdown but Hardware stays on

Wasn't sure if this belonged in the XP section or the Hardware section, so I aplogize if it's misplaced.

I just built my own PC, and everything works but the following: On shutdown, Windows XP shuts down as it should, the monitor goes into sleep mode (as it has no signal), but all the hardware inside the case stays running (Fans, CD Rom Drive, LED's...). I've waited several minutes to see if it would shut down on its own, but to no avail, and I have to hit the power button manually to shut it down completely.

PC Specs if needed:

Edit: there's also a constant orange LED on the motherboard in the bottom right quadrant, is this bad ? normal ?

Hello Viper128, Welcome to PC Help Forum...

I could be mistaken but that sounds like Power Management is not set correctly. You will find this setting in the BIOS. Your motherboard manual will tell you how to Access the BIOS (usualy hitting DEL, ESC or F1 during POST). Read up on the BIOS setting and see what fit your needs. As for the LED, Check your front panel wires again. Make sure they are connected to the correct pins on the header. hint: there is a little arrow on one side...

Good Luck!

Welcome to PCHF VIper

Agree with LC.

I think that LED light is normal just let me check.

Edit: I looked in the manual for your motherboard and the flashing orange light is fine, it signifies your mainboard is charged.

Thanks , I appreciate the help so far. I've been going through the manual, and with the help of some coworkers I have a decent place to start as far as the power config management. I'll keep you posted on my progress, or lack there of, whichever be the case

I've checked the wiring inside the PC, as well as made sure ACP mode was on (or whatever that power setting is called) in both the BIOS and in windows itself, and i can't seem to figure it out.

You mentioned above that the connectors had little arrows on them, is that there to show the + or - side of the connector?

I also seem to be experiencing a sound issue where ocassionally video game sounds are muted, or very low in volume, but then it goes back to normal. I haven't heard this phenomenon in windows yet, only in world of warcraft, so it leads me to believe it's not the drivers...am i wrong?

Hello Viper,

The arrow shows the correct orientation of the connection. On some LEDs the polarity needs to be correct (ie. bicolor LEDs) to function properly. For the shutdown problem, look in the Control Panel for Power Options. There may be some Help there.

Does the sound issue showup during cut scenes or movies while playing the game? Could be no more than a dirty disk. If it gets worse we will have to break out the Real techs to help you...

TTYL!
