Question [Answered] IE7 Temp Files Error, I'm Going Crazy

To the point: my internet browsing speed has very noticeably slowed down to a crawl. I know it is not my actual connection because if I use another browser that isn’t based on IE code (e.g. Firefox), my browsing is perfect. But, because I’m an IE user, I would much rather solve this problem which is bugging me a lot. So, when in a normal situation someone visits let’s say MSN.com and then you decide to visit Live.com and you hit the Back button, you would expect to have MSN.com load almost instantly because of the temporary files stored on the computer when visiting a site. Well, that is not happening in my case. Even when on the same website, every page needs to load as if the Temporary Files folder was full or something. I then decided to empty out the Temporary File Folder (TFF). I did. Still, browsing slower than dial up, and I have Verizon DSL (3.0 Mbps). So what I did then was to go to the TFF by clicking on Tools > Internet Options > General tab > under Browsing History > Settings. I then get the following window: http://www.downloadcenter.academicambassadors.org/images/IETEMPERR1.JPG What? How is that possible? 0 MB and nothing under the Current Folder! Something must be wrong, and I’m sure of it. But it gets worse. I then try to fix what I assumed was a small problem by changing the 0 to 250MB and I get the following: http://www.downloadcenter.academicambassadors.org/images/IETEMPERR2.JPG Now if that isn’t weird enough for anyone, I don’t know what is. I then do what it tells me to do, which is pick 8. I do. I click OK. But to make sure I go back to the same window with the settings and what do I find: the value back at 0. I don’t know how “isolated” of an incident is, but if anyone has any solution to this, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, I don’t know how well I explained my issue, so if anyone has any questions, please drop a comment or contact me. Thanks a lot, this problem is making very crazy.

Hey Alber, welcome to PCHF. Obviously my recommendation is to switch to Firefox, but that's not for everyone, so let's try to fix this one first. try this:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If this doesn't help, we'll start looking for malware.

thanks,

v

Hey, thanks a lot for replying. I know that I could just switch to Firefox, but I've always been an IE user and I visit a lot of Microsoft sites that need IE, so that's why I would prefer to stay an IE user. But anyways, the ATF Cleaner cleared about a 1GB of temp files, but I am still experiencing the problem with how I can set the settings for the Temp Folder in Internet Options for IE. If you haven't yet, I recommend you look at the screenshots I have of what I'm talking about. Screenshot 1. Screenshot 2. If you look at Screenshot 1, you can see that the value is set to "0" and there isn't even a folder set to receive the Temp files, but when I click on "View files" the folder that has always opened when I would click on it before still opens. Also, if you look at Screenshot 2, you can see that when I try to change the value to something thats anything above 0, I get that dialog. According to the dialog, I can select between 8 and 8. So I do just to see what happens. And when I do so, it just goes back to 0 even though I selected 8. And about the Malware, I don't know if that can be it, but I've ran scans with Spybot Search & Destroy, McAfee Anti-Virus, Webroot Spy Sweeper for MSN, and Windows Defender. None of them find anything. If you have any other recommendations, please, they will be greatly appreciated.

check the security and privacy settings and see what those are set at....sometimes those can be set too high to allow caching of files, and that could be slowing you down....

Security level is set to Medium-high and Privacy Cookie settings are set to Medium. I think they are the settings that are "Default" or "Recommended" in IE7. One thing I tried to do was to to change the folder under the Temporary Files settings, and this is what happened: Screenshot 3. This was after running the ATF application too.

have I mentioned how much I dislike IE 7?

Let me do some looking around, it's obviously a setting somewhere we are missing, and we just need to observe the obvious......

back shortly..

Haha, I think I sensed it... Anyways, thank you very, very much. I don't know how you manage to help all of the people on the site and still help me.
