Default My laptop freezes

I have a hp compaq nx9420, which is a quite powefull lapptop, runs on intel dual core 2ghz, 1gb ddr2, and i have a Sound Max integrated HD sound card. My problem is that whenever i listen to music on my laptop speakers, an the sound level is above 50% after a while my laptop freezes. It retuns to normal after i press 2 times the mute button. This doesen't happen if i use headphones or if im not turning the volume to high. My laptop always behaved this way, even when it was brand new.

Do you have any extra options in the sound properties that can be dis-abled, such as enhancements (bass boost, virtual surround, room correction....)?

What happens if you plug the speakers into the headphones socket?
