Default [Answered] Windows XP Startup Problem. "Black Screen"

Hi Guys,

I really need some help. My computer has been running really slow lately and now the computer doesn't turn on. It loads up to the Windows XP screen and then when the "Welcome" screen is meant to come on showing all the user profiles, it just stays black and nothing happens. Then I have to restart. I haven't been able to start it up. Can anyone please help. Once I can get it to load, I will post a HJT log, but for now, I really need some help! Please!

Thanks In Advance

Hi and welcome to PCHF.

Try this first;

1. Start your computer.
2. Keep tapping the F8 key
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Hi Hengis,

Thanks for the suggestion, although I have already tried that and the same thing occurs. Even safe mode doesn't even load. I know its not a HD problem since the HD light is on, and it is on when the OS loading screen is on. I really hope there is some way to fix it.

Thanks

If you have your install disk, you can boot into the recovery console, which is basically DOS, and then run chkdsk /r and that should allow you to get into windows. Do you have your boot disk, or a friends you can use? As you aren't installing windows, you can use any boot disk from xp to boot from the cd, and get to the repair console. The admin password, unless you set it, should be blank.

Thanks, and let us know how you get on.

do you have anyone's install disk? Any of them should work. If not, we can try other measures.

thanks,
