Default [Fixed] Can I shoot windows.. please...

Hey,

Well alright, here's the thing, my girlfriend's computer crashed, and fortunently she had a backup on the HD that didn't get erased, and she got her pooter back up but was sad everything was gone till I managed to land on the folder with 10Gbs of abckup data. Only problem... it keeps saying "Access denied" on everything! I managed to get around some of the errors by sharing the folders and then clicking cancel after it gave an error but started to apply properties.
It's highly irritating because all her stuff is in there and I don't get why it's not working. I'm going to try to give her instructions on how to do in safe-mode but I'd rather not.

Any suggestions?

Hi DarkLord,

If this is XP Home - you will need to do this from Safe Mode - logged in as Administrator.

Goto Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> make sure Simple File Sharing is unchecked
Right click on the folder in question, and select Sharing and Security.
Select the security tab and then select Advanced (bottom right corner).

In here, select the Owner tab and select whatever username your g/f uses. Check the box for inheirate and then apply and ok. This should take a while depending on data size in the folders.

Should be all sweet after that.

Ah, nice, I shall try that tomorow!

Also, is there a way to keep it from ever doing it again? Because it's highly annoying. If it ever happened on one of my IB papers.. I'd blow a fuse, and out the window the computer would go :P

Security? You mean locking the user out of his own files? O.o

Well...yea
There are parts of the hard drive that only windows should access...
But aside from that - if you "repair" install windows - it will mess all your permissions up...it is painful, but there's nothing to be done about it unfortunately - we deal with it every day at work here.

I can already imagine the 256bit AES encryption woes with Windows VISTA...
