Default Screen goes black on startup

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, and I hope everyone could help me solve this problem. I'm not a beginner but this problem really drives me crazy.
Monitor screen would go black on me after the logo and the loading bar appeared.
I suspected this had something to do with the driver of the video card, so I started windows in safe mode. Everything appeared like they should. I reinstalled the driver of the video card, restarted my computer on the command of the installation. The desktop was miraculously brought back to life. However, the old problem immediately came back after I normally restarted windows.
Could this be that my AGP slot was fried? or something else?
My specs:- Windows XP pro SP2
PNY nVidia Geforce 5600 128mb
CRT 17" monitor
Thanks for all the help.

Hi and welcome to the forum

No, I personally don't think your AGP slot is "fried" - Why not go back into safe mode and remove the VGA card from Device Manager. Then re-boot and let Windows determine the default driver for you card. After that and when you are back into "normal" Windows, find an up to date driver for your card - not the one you have used previously.
