Default windows classic theme

hi i am very new to all this forum buisness so i hope i am posting this in the right place,

Basically, every time I reboot my PC, the theme goes back to half of windows XP. The taskbar changes to the blue and green, but the rest is classic. It happened after I installed one of the windows updates i think,i have reformatted 4 times and it is still doing the same thing,i have changed it the usual way ie:control panel, display etc but every time i reboot it changes itself.i would be really greatfull if anyone has experienced this and knows how to fix it,many thanks

Hello bungle1007,

Welcome to PCHF. It wouldn't be a windows update. I've seen this problem before, but it's normally due to policies being set by an external source, such as an installed program or something you are logging onto. The PC is used at home, and not part of an office domain or network?

yes it is used at home, the reason i said it was after an update was i didn't really have any programs installed when it first happened, just my firewall, modem and enditall.then i started my updates and then it started to change.

It's possible that it could have been a corrupt update, however there are two things that suggest that this is unlikely, since you have since re-formatted your HDD? And also, you are able to change your theme to "Windows XP" successfully, but when you reboot, it reverts to the classic theme.

I do have one suggestion though:
- Can you go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. From there, scroll down to "Themes", right click and go to Properties.
- Startup type should be "Automatic".
- In the Recovery tab, each of the three failure box's should be set to "Restart the Service".

See if this resolves your problem, otherwise, can you follow PCHF Prework on my signature, and post a hijack log here. We'll have a member of security check the log for malware, and I'll check to see if there are any programes I recognise that could potentially cause this problem.
