Angry Corrupt or do i need a new hard drive?

hey

when my PC starts (win XP SP2) it tries to CHKDSK, when i let it, it keeps repeating something along the lines of "creating index $0 in file 25" until i turn my PC off.

When i skip it i keep getting alerts in the sys tray and sometimes pop ups saying that random files are corrupt and C:\$Extend\$objid is corrupt or unreadable.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ste

Hi Ste,

Welcome to PCHF.

Have you let chkdsk finish doing it's checks? I know checkdisk can sometimes take a few hours, but this is necessary if you have file corruption.

Corrupt files are normally caused if you shut the PC down whist the HDD is still working, or if you have other hardware problems (including HDD failure).

Can you actually get into Windows? If you can then run scandisk. Also, how much space do you have on the hard drive? It may be that chkdsk is trying to create an index but is simply running out of space.

There may be bad blocks on your hard drive - scandisk will identify them and attempt to fix them.
