Default Wierdest CD Drive Problem... :(

Ok, this is connected to my other post about installing Xp, on my computer, but sadly the the cd drive won't load it, so i have to somehow make the dvd drive master which i'm finding slight trouble with. Still this isn't the reason for this post.

The reason is -

1. My cd drive is there, i right click it and it says "this device is working properly", i go to device manager and it says it's there, i put a cd in, and it does't load, it comes up with "Please place cd in drive".

WTF...is happening here... How can this be, and how can i resolve this problem, and yes i've tried loads of different cd's...

Thank you.

If this helps - Print screen of driver details -

The middle one for some reason isn't ticked.

Hi Hexar,

The driver screen you see is normal. The reason why it isn't ticked is because it was made by a thrid party company, and wasn't passed through Microsoft's "Digital Signing" before it was released. Drivers rarely pass through Microsoft when they are released.

If you can see the drive in "My Computer", it is far more likely to be a hardware problem at this point. When you open up the CD from "My Computer", do you see the files there? Are there any CD's at all that work, data CD's, music CD's? Are the CD's your using manufacturered or copied?

nope none at all mate. It just says "please insert a disc into drive D".

And i've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver....

edit: also i found out that, when i right click on the cd drive and click "eject" it DOES eject.... so what on earth could be the problem...

Hex,

I believe your problem is most likely that the lens are either dirty or worn.

- Try using a CD cleaning kit on the drive. You can buy these from most hardware stores such as Dixon's, but you can also buy them from Tesco's, Sainbury's e.t.c.

- If you have other devices on the same ribbon cable. Try unplugging them.

- Try a different IDE cable.

- Try using it in another PC.

You don't need to install the drivers for the Lite-On, Windows will automatically install these for you.

k i will try the lens cleaning...sad thing is tho, it's gonna be extremely hard, as dell processors onnly open from one end.

So its so compact and hard to see things, but i will try what you have suggested.
