Default Transfering files from windows XP hdd to hdd

Hello,

Recently I had the liquid cooling system in my computer tower leek frying the motherboard, grpx card etc. I was in a hurry to get a new pc and I was near broke so I bought a cheap laptop and I also bought an internal to external/usb hdd conversion kit so I could save my files.

Hoooked up the converted hdd from my old tower to the laptop and all worked fine. The only thing it would not allow me to do is open the computer admin user folder from my old PC "Matthew Brown". I tried creating that user as an admin on this pc with no luck. I also tried windows file and settings transfer and it appeared to work at first but then it listed every file in those folders and said it couldn't transfer them/they had to be transfered manually.

I know this is a security feature built into XP but does anyone know a way around this?? It is kinda annoying since I have important documents in that folder!

Thanks,
Matthew Brown

Welcome to the PCHF Matthew.

This problem has been answered many times in the forums here - very simple.

If you're running XP Home - you must follow these steps from the Administrator account in Safe Mode.

Open My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options
Scroll down to "Simple File Sharing" and make sure it is turned off.
Apply and close all open "Explorer" windows (my computer, network places, my documents, windows explorer, etc etc)

Goto the folder that has "access denied" (don't open it).
Right click on the folder and select Sharing and Security...
Select the Security tab and click on Advanced down the bottom.
Select the Owner tab and then select your username (the one you normally log on with). Check the box at the bottom which says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects
Apply and ok out of all the windows - might take some time depending on how many files are there.
