Default Windows Installer

Hello Everyone.. Im using a genuine validated and registered ver XP-Pro.. all has been fine for a considerable time.
However last weekl I decided to install a Vista Transformation pack..just the kind that give you a Vista lookalike without it actually being such!!
Well I decided I didnt really like it but upon uninstalling it stated sytem files had been changed with this pack etc and may affect stability if removed..so rather then risk that I did a Windows Repair Install!
I now find I cannot do any MS windows updates ..the windows Installer 3.1 or whatever! says cant update!
So I downloaded the installer to my desk and tried running it that way ..but no luck again..just says Did not complete.. and must restart PC.
Ive tried auto update but still though it goes through initial stage og going to install.. it stops with error... did not complete.
I am sole user and adminastrator of my PC and never had problems really before..wondering if theres a way to remedy this!
Ive cleaned all cache/temp /junk files etc!

Any help much apprrciated

Hi noles,

Try going to Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

You will need your Windows XP CD for this operation.
