Default Buggered up Boot up!

Hi there all. I'm new to this forum but I would welcome ANY help anyone may be able to give me regarding a major fault on my girlfriend's PC.

Basically, she was using the PC the other night to play Freecell(!) and whilst she was away powdering her nose a Gremlin made its way inside the tower and crossed a few wires over so that when she returned, refreshed and raing to go(!) she was faced with the message below!

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

<Windows root>\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I made a few enquiries online and have had several replies - none of which have helped me as yet. So if anyone out there in PC land has any advice I'd welcome it with open arms.

Finally, could I either install another copy of Windows XP Home onto her PC's hard drive without over writing all of her data, or could I install another IDE drive and put a copy of XP on to that then recover her data by accessing her 'old' hard drive through 'My Computer?'

Any help you can offer would be most welcome.
Kindest regards
George.

You could choose either avenue George, but the first one would be the quickest and you may have to use the copy of XP that was used initially to restore the file.
The second avenue will work but there may be file/folder permission problems afterwards.

Thanks for the interest. Could you tell me I wonder, how do I partition the C Drive so that I can install a 'clean' copy of XP home?
Thanks
George.

Thanks for the link - I may have found a couple of answers to my questions. If, on the other hand, you see a big orange glow in the sky tonight - I was wrong! :-)
Kindest regards
George.

I failed! I spent hours last night trying to get XP Home to boot up and it wouldn't!
Anybody got any ideas please, as to why I can't get it to boot up?
