Exclamation Recording off amp

i have a mutitrack recording software then i record off a mic into it for my band. Though this mic i record the guitars and singer . Then i have the drummer and because it is an electrick drum kit it messes up the sound ,you hear the pads on the recording being hit. so when this drum kit is plugged into the amp, there are outputs on the amp, if i plug a guitar lead ( sorry forgot proper name ) into that then into my comp useing a 1/8" stereo plug to phono plug into my comuter input, then record from the mic and the amp at the same time. The amp will not blow up my comp or anything will it ?

Yes it could!
When you plug your amp straight into the computer, that power surge could fry your motherboard.

Read this article. http://akamai.www.berkleemusic.com/a...guitarists.pdf

so is there any way i can record safely ?

by the way the method i said earlyer was useing the line out plug on the amp would that make any difference

to add i found this on a website :

There are several ways of recording your guitar directly onto the hard drive of your computer. If you play an electric guitar, then the simplest way is to connect the headphone/line out from your amp to the line in of your soundcard. All you need to do this is a Computer Guitar Cablewhich has a standard jack on one end, and a mini-jack on the other. You can try out how this sounds by using the built-in Windows sound recorder software (it's in the Start Menu->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder).

Hey Custom,

First of all, could you clarify the bit about the drums? It got a little confusing.

Secondly, you would be better off recording each of the components seperately and giving yourself more control on levels etc.

Have you gotten the cable as suggested in that article? It seems to me that if the cable is designed to plug into the PC, they have done more than just put an audio jack onto the end, they would also have addressed the amp issue.

Looking forward to your reply,

sorry about the drum issue: the drums are electrick therefore they need an amp to plug into, but when the drummer drums he is hitting pads to make the sound and a normal mic pics up the sound of the pads being hit and makes the drums sound messed up .

i havent got the cabe yet but if i did get it i would pug it into the mic plug on the pc right .

o and seeming i only have one mic input hole on my laptop could i get an adaptor then plug mutipal amps in useing several leads.

Hold on there partna!

We actually have someone who was part of the staff who is an expert on how you should be doing this. I will PM him and see if he has the time to look in and advise you. Don't even THINK about plugging in multiple amps onto a laptop sound card in the mean time.

Because the drum is electric, you shouldn't be putting a mic on it anyway, it should be able to go direct, I believe. Let me see if I can get our friend, I'm not sure how much he is around these days, but we can try.

Will check back with you once I hear from him.
