corrupted? the OS should mark it as bad, and just not write to it. A physically bad sector, though, is time to back up the data and get a new disk, as those only get worse.

I got a different XP disc, and I kept pasting the file back on, I used a second computer to do it also, after a while it stopped deleting itself

Yeah I'll tell him he just has to replace the drive (if the new cable doesn't do the trick). It's only a 40GB IDE drive anyway, so it won't cost much to replace.
