Hello mmarley, and welcome to the forum.
Installing vista would certainly fix this problem if your system will support it, but lets see if we can get you a cheaper fix. We have an excellent team of techs here that will help you sort it out, lets get a few details for them. Are you saying that your motherboard now has usb1, and your usb 2 devices wont work? You mentioned drivers for win 98/me, was win xp home installed over one of these as an upgrade? Also, can you give us your system specs, make model...ect. And while we`re waiting on one of the techs to look at this, can you go to device manager and look at your usb devices and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks on any of them . Right click on My computer, click on properties, in the box that pops up, click on hardware, then device manager. Scroll to the bottom and look under usb devices. Let us know what you see.

Default usb 2.0

MSI motherboard model p4mam2-v. supposedly was setup for usb 2.0. when i plug in one of my thumb drives i get a message "this device will work faster if plugged into a hi-speed port" or something like that. the other thumb drives i have don't say that. the "usb enhanced controller" does not say anything about usb 2.0. my set up has 512 ram, 2.93 ghz celeron, 128mb vid card

Hi mmarley,

There is normally a setting in the BIOS for this if you go into your BIOS (normally F2 OR DEL on boot) and look for the USB section and make sure it is set to hi-speed.
