Default [Answered] Question On Installing Win 98 & XP on One Computer

Hi again....I'd like to install the two above OS's on one computer. I understand that if I do this, I'll have to partition one of my two drives. Currently I have a 120 gig and a 60 gig drive installed in the computer. If I partition the 60 gig drive (the main drive) into (2) 30 gig logical drives, I'm hoping I can install Win 98 on one partition and XP on the other. Now here's the question regarding my 120 gig HD. Can I install software (i.e., games, utility programs, MS Word, Excel, etc.) on that drive so that both operating systems will have the ability to access them? How will each OS treat the additional 120 GB drive?

Please help !!!

Thanks......Dave

Im not sure if the applications part is possible.

If you need to partition and have 98 on one and xp on the other then both partitions will need to be FAT i believe.

yes, they would both need to be lowest common denominator, as would the 120 gig drive. I don't think that 98 will even recognize ntfs, as technically, it didnt' exist when 98 was made.

IMO, I would keep everything at the FAT32 level, and you should (should) be fine.

I would do a ratio of 20 gig using 98 and 40 gig using XP, DJ.
98 needs installing first because if you install XP first 98 will go oops there is a newer OS on the system and stop.
Both OS's should regard the 120gig as space and nothing more just remember to format it.
All .exe progs should see C: as the system and install to that.

Default Thanks...A Few More Question

I have a question for Wolfeymole rearding programs being loaded on the the D: (120 gig drive) ......If I install the additional software such as games, MS Office 2000, etc. on the 120 gig drive (D would both OSs be able to access that drive so that I don't have to load it on both partitions?

Also, is there a difference between FAT and FAT32....AND is NTFS that much better?

Thanks man......Dave

NTFS is best of the three, but it can't be read by Windows 98.
FAT32 is the better than FAT. Only major problem I ran into with FAT32 is the max file size is 8 GB, which can quickly become a major issue when video editing.
I have installed a program on Vista and ran it in Windows XP from the other hard drive and vice versa, but it didn't do so without some problems. I can imagine the same will be only worse with two completely diffrent Windows versions.
