Default [Answered] is ADSL really this bad?

Hello,

My computer is not so bad -- a Dell cheapy but functional. Thanks to this site I have cleaned and scrubbed it and continue to.

The basic functions are okay, but if I want to watch a video or play an online game -- it's no deal.
I'm a big John Stewart fan but i can't access his site at all! It just says 'loading' forever.

I have an ADSL system and of course I wonder if I should change to a better type but thought I'd ask before I spend the extra money...

By the way, I can watch YouTube sometimes (if the line isn't busy?)

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Iain

Which ISP do you have and what speed is it running at?
For example I'm with Pipex running at about 4mbps

Depends on where you live. I live in a rural part of the United States and the max I can get is 1.5 Mbps ADSL line over my existing telephone wire. If you live in a city and have Cable TV, that might be a better deal for you to get Cable interent. Make some calls around to your cable company and ISP and see what they offer.

And yes, DSL is worth it!!!

Hi and thanks for the replies!

My ISP is AOL.

I just took a speed test (in Japan where I live) and came up with .41. Ouch.
I tried to verify with another on-line test but couldn't get past the 'loading' point.

My ADSL is independent of the telephone line.

Thanks again for your help!

AOL good grief, my heart goes out to you.
I recently did some work for a friend who runs AOL, and I had heard how bad it was but never imagined just HOW bad untill I re-installed it for her, even though I begged her to get another ISP.
Installing the DSL modem took 30 minutes with having to run through the ******** that came with the cd.
Lots of pretty pictures and instructions that implied stupidity beyond belief.
The design of the browser page etc is something my 8 year old grandaughter would be at home with.
Sorry I'm rambling but I implore you to seek an alternative ISP asap
You are obviously on cable so I would get onto them as to me anything less than at least 1 meg is unacceptable.
I'm also unsure of how much memory you have and the type of graphics card you possess as these factors could also affect the result of your problem.

Yeh wolfey you could have just explored the cd and taken the setup files of it

Anyway im on UKFSN at about 6mbps. Very good customer service! And broadband/dsl is definitely worth it!

Your in Japan, but your post is under the flag of the United States of America. Hmmm.

AOL is the worst major DSL provider. You could look into Cable internet, but I'm not sure what they offer in diffrent countries.
