Exclamation [Answered] ***PC is Sluggish. PLEASE HELP***

Hi all. This has been driving me crazy for past few days:

-PC is taking longer to load up (about 2-5xtra seconds more that usual)
-Clicking on files sometimes take longer to load (about 2-5xtra seconds more that usual)
-Playing video files stutter when I start them up or when i forward to a certain part go in slow motion for a few seconds and take a while to load too (about 2-5xtra seconds more that usual)

Basically everything is taking longer to load, PC is moving slower. My friend said it was WINXP deteriorating since there is a lot of junk on PC and I've had PC for 3+ years. He recommends backing up and reinstalling everything.
This problem just started recently after I installed a new POWER SUPPLY since my last one died on me. I dont think it's the issue my friend mentioned above nor the new POWER SUPPLY.

I tried:
-System Restore
-Scan for viruses in Safe Mode
-Run spyware in Safe Mode
-Restoring the BIOS to its default
-Attempted Disc Defrag BUT it said I needed about 15% free space to do it (about 15gig, I only have 5gig free)
-Uninstalling my recently installed software/hardware:
--IE 7.0
--MSN MESSENGER LIVE 8
--drivers for my new LG DVD Burner

Anyways, nothing works, PC still moving slow. No viruses were deceted and nothing major with spyware. I'm back to using IE 6.0 and MSN MESSENGER 7.5. PC is still running the same/sluggish.

PC SPECS:
-WIN XP SP2 with all new WIN updates
-ASUS X-Series Mother Board (A7V8X-X)
-AMD Athlon XP 2500+ processor
-1024 RAM
-DVD Burner LG GSA-H22L
-DVD Rom Sony

If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Hello marco49, and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like maybe you just need to do a little house cleaning on your machine. Things get kinda scrambled up after long periods without defragging and removing unneeded files. Try this helpful guide here, follow it carefully, and it should speed things up a bit. If you still have problems afterwards, come back and someone here will help you straighten em out:

Hello again Marco,

First of all - a System Restore won't actually help with performance...

I've noticed you haven't tried a defrag?
If you goto My Computer and right click on your hard drive and select Properties. Proceed to the Tools section and select Defragent Disk. A new window will pop up wher eyou will need to select the hard drive again, and click on Defrag as well.

If you have more then 1 hard drive, do it for each drive individually.
Also make sure your screen saver is disabled, and don't use your computer while this is happening (for best results)

The guide suggested by uncleed is also a good one to do
But that should boost your performance above what it was before as well.

Must have been typing at the same time again uncleed

Thanks for the quick response guys. I used the Windows optimizer tutorial and here are the results:

I did a DISC CLEANUP of C: drive and it freed up about 5 gig.
I did DEFRAG of C: and D: drives and it freed up another 3-5 gig on each drive.
I deleted SYSTEM RESTOR restor points.
I disabled the Windows XP Hibernate.

Did I notice a difference in performance after? Yes, a big one. But unfortunately my *SLUGGISH* problem is still here.

I notice it most when I boot PC and when WINXP BLACK screen with loading status bar disappear, it takes about 5seconds for the BLUE Welcome screen to come on after it. Once I plug in my password to log on, I hear the logon MUSIC but the screen is still stuck at the BLUE Welcome screen for an extra few seconds. My video files still jitter here and there too..

None of the above was happening about a week ago. Everything was loading so quickly. I have absolutely no idea whats causing the current issue.
Anyone have any other suggestions?????

Thanks in advance!

I certainly do,

Check out this thread here and follow my tweaks. They worked well, just not for the purpose the original poster was looking for unfortunately.

Let me know if you get stuck, or how it goes.

I'm gonna try these tweaks in next few days and see what happens. Unfortunatly I don't think it's something a tweak can fix. This problem started up recently all at once, it's something I must have done or installed or uninstalled, ect. The PC is slow to respond, it's like Ive somehow slowed it down...

Is there a program that can possibly scan my PC and check the performace and see maybe why it's lagging/being so slougish?

Maybe only thing to do is do a full reformat

Hello marco.
I wouldnt reformat just yet, theres still hope. I would try the tweaks that GaRHaR suggested and go from there. Installing/uninstalling programs, adding/deleting files...ect, sometimes leaves behind lots of garbage. Uninstallers dont always remove all of a programs components, and if you do alot of experimenting things can get pretty clogged up in there, especially the registry. Settings can sometimes change because of improper shutdown, power surges or interruptions while youre running programs/applications. Looking at how much space you freed up, i would say you got alot of stuff on that machine. You may need to run ccleaner again. But try the tweaks, and lets see what else GaRHaR has in mind for you. You may need to do a repair install, which is usually faster than a reinstall, and you normally dont have to reinstall your programs/saved files and folders.

Edit: whatever you dont click on any of the links or pop up adds offering a free scan and guranteeing to improve your performance!!!
