Default Extremely slow computer with a Gig of Ram

I had this problem last year and you guys helped out. You found some things that helped but the computer still never returned to what I thought it should with a Gig of RAM but it was much better so I didn't pursue it. But within the last week or so it has crawled to such a speed that I have to wait "minutes" between clicking on anything from word documents to Internet to just about anything on my computer. Nothing new added at the time but I have added a couple of things in the last month but no sudden change after adding any of them...this has just been a slow progressive process that has now reached the unbearable stage.

I run NAV and Spysweeper at all times. I also ran AdAware and SpyBot S&D but they only found a few cookies...nothing too bad. My NAV nightly scan crawled to taking 9 hours to complete yesteday so the straw that finally broke the camels back pushed me here. I wasting too much time sitting and waiting for things to move.

I did all the Prework last night and am attaching my logs.

I run Windows XP, IE7, have a Gig of RAM, and an 80 Gig harddrive that has plenty of free space and says it doesn't need defraged (which I did anyway about 2 months ago). Rebooting only seems to help some and only for a short time. My CPU usage is tied up at 100 % most of the time within a few hours of rebooting. Sometimes, but not all times, Spysweeper is using anywhere from 30 to 95 percent for more than a few seconds. If Spysweeper is behaving then it seems that IE has hogged the CPU, and if not IE then several other items are using 15 to 20 % on their own and tie up the total percentage.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Cindy

while I am waiting for you to have time to look at my logs I just wanted to report that even though my computer was moving better after my reboots, I left the house for a couple of hours and came home to a totally frozen computer. The screen saver bouncing balls were frozen and the only way I could get out of it was to press and hold the power button until the computer shut down. I hope those logs will tell you the problem because this is extremely frustrating.

thank you,
Cindy

Hello there, sorry for the delay.

I see nothing particularly wrong in your logs, and with your pretty decent specifics, I'm not sure off-hand now as to what may cause this problem.

Download: CCleaner (freeware)
|MG| Free Download - CCleaner Slim (No Yahoo Toolbar, English) 1.37.456
Run the installer, and uncheck the option to install Yahoo toolbar (unless you want Yahoo toolbar).
Once installed, run CCleaner click the Windows [tab]
Select the following:

Next: click Options click the Settings tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then Exit
Note: Please do NOT use the Applications tab or the Issues icon. Keep to the Cleaner icon and the Windows tab.

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check
Click Properties, and then click Tools.
Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start
To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

I suggest clicking both boxes.

It will ask "Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?"
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Next go to Start > Run.
Type in
sfc /scannow
Note you may be asked for your Windows XP CD if errors are found.

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP for the sfc /scannow instructions

You can run a test at PCPitStop. Please register (it's free) with PCPitStop and run the full tests Welcome to PC PitStop!
This is an excellent diagnostics scan that may help in determining problems not related to malware. When the tests are complete, a results page will pop up. Click "Share these results with TechExpress" on the left-hand side. Then copy the URL provided and post it here for review.

You might want to take a look at this page created by miekiemoes, one of the Global Moderators here, on slow systems, and some things you can try to do to try to improve it:

In your next post please post Tech link results from PCPitStop and a new HJT log.

Well I am not getting very far. I have downloaded and installed ccleaner. (PS: the directions for uncheck "only delete files older than 48 hrs" is slightly wrong...it is not under Settings, it is under Advanced.)

However I am getting hung up on the next part...when I right click the C drive in my computer and then click on properties I get an error box...Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry... If I click on more info...AppName: explorer.exe, AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180, ModName: vproshellext.dll, ModVer: 10.0.0.8429, Offset: 000423a. There is another place to click for even more detail but neither of these boxes will let me copy and paste...I have to write all the stuff by hand if I want to report it here. One part of the second info box had a path to a file but I searched for the file and even the last part of the file name but the search said it did not exist. The file name was C:\DOCUME~1\owner\LOCALS~1\temp\1f0e_appcompat.txt

After this My Computer is "not responding" and I have to close it with "end task" in task manager.

What is causing My Computer to behave like this?

Thanks,
Cindy

It may be a problem with a Context Menu Handler. Download and run the ShellExView utility according to the instructions in Method 2 here. To group all Context Menu handlers together, just click on Type underneath the Menu items. Try disabling the non-Microsoft items listed under Type -> Context Menu only (one at a time and then try right-clicking to see if you can identify if one is causing the problem). If there is anything you are not sure of ask first. Let us know if this helps.

Just a quick note as I probably won't have time to sit down and do all the rest until later tonight but the ShellExtView was very helpful. It wasn't a context handler but Norton Ghost...was able to do a search on the ModName and it went right to it and also matched the ModVer. I disabled it and Right Clicking on My Computer works now...Thanks.
