Default Hibernation fails

I use a 'Mecer' notebook with Intel Centrino 2GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, running Wndows XP Pro SP2. I often used hibernation, but now it does not work anymore. It comes up with an error message saying:

The device driver for the 'Generic volume' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation.

It then gives some useless advice about reinstalling or updating the driver. I did that, but it is a plug-and play driver from Microsoft, so the next boot-up it installs the same thing again - with the same result. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it? What on earth is a 'Generic Volume'?

Hello heinziten,

Welcome to PCHF.

A Generic volume is normally an external USB pen stick or hard drive. Can you try to disconnect this an see if you can hybernate?

Default Got one - not plugged in

Hello,
thanks for replying. I do have a USB Flash drive hanging on a lanyard around me neck, but it is not connected. I only plug it in when I need it. The only USB device plugged in at the moment is a GPRS modem, but it does not stay connected when I want to hibernate. When I attempt to hibernate, there is nothing at all on any USB port.

Hey heinziten,

Have a look at this link for safely removing your pen drive when you do have it plugged, and what to do just before you remove it: Safely Removing a USB Device

Default Do that

Hello 'madmonkey',
I know about safe removal of USB device, and practice it.However it is possible that I might have forgotten about it in a hurry. What damage will that do? How do I fix it?

To be honest heinz, I don't use it myself unless it causes any problems (like the problems your describing). As long as there is no activity on the pen at the time you remove it, saving files etc as this can cause data corruption. Using the safe removal tool will prevent any data corruption and uninstall the Generic Volume properly.
