I think i will have to get my cd-rom drive working again, or else get a new one put in. If i get a new cd-rom drive installed in my laptop, will this work, or will i have to be able to boot before it will work?
To be quite honest Germanio my money is on your hdd is finished but we can always check just to make sure later.
Does the laptop possess a floppy disk drive, if so get the XP boot disks from here;
How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
What you will need at some stage is the XP installation disk and here we are back to the working ability of a cdrom drive.
If you have a fully functional version of XP then the boot files will be on that cd.

No, it doesnt have a floppy drive. I think you may be right about the hdd being finished. Its a pity cos i had some stuff on it that i hadn't saved anywhere else. Wil have to do it again i suppose.

Thanks to everybody who helped me out, i know it didn't turn out ideal in the end but thats life! Thanks anyway!

Hey Guys,

@Ger, I wouldn't give up the ship just yet M8, were you able to determine if your USB was listed in the boot order of the BIOS?

If it is, get them to send you the USB Floppy from home, no offense dear Wolfey, but my money's on the File System.

Looking forward to you reply,

TTFN

Hi, sorry bout delay...no computer means limited access to internet!
ladygreenwitch, i'm afraid usb isn't an option in the boot order. FDD is, i'm guessing thats floppy disc drive, but would probably have to be built in, would it?

Ok
Without an option to boot from USB you WILL have to get that cdrom drive repaired germanio.

Hey Guys,

@Wolfey - I absolutely agree.

@Germanio - I still think that repairing your CD player will be worth it to you in the long run. Chances are you have a file system problem, which won't be that difficult to fix once you have access to the drive.

Please let us know what you decide to do.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
