Default Swapped HD, now won't boot, help!!

I was swapping a used HD into a cpu with XP Pro on it, but cannot get the system to boot. I keep getting the following error:

Non-system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready

I am able to get into the set-up and i notice that the only "boot from" options are cdrom and floppy. Is this my problem since i want to boot from the hard drive, but can't? How do I fix this? I do not have any of the original discs, not the xp code sticker .....if that helps

Hi sd45,

Welcome to PCHF.

The HDD your putting into the system doesn't have an operating system installed, therefore you won't be able to boot to it.

If you don't have any install CD's (everybody should IMHO), then your only option would be to copy or clone your current disk. The easiest option would be to use something like Norton Ghost (Amazon.co.uk: Norton Ghost 2003: Software) which costs around £20. If your looking for a free alternative, this may be possible if you have another PC you could use, possibly a friends that you can put the HDD's into and copy manually?

At what point did it go wrong? You should get to a point during the install to D - Delete Partition, and the C-Create Partition during the setup. This will clear the HDD and start fresh.
