Recently my computer crashed while I was working. When I restarted, it hung up on the Windows start screen (where that horizontal bar just keeps scrolling across). At first I was able to restart using Safe mode, but after a few more restarts now it's hanging even in Safe mode at this point in the registry:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(o)partition(1)\Windows\System 32\Drivers\Mup.sys
I'd really rather not have to reinstall Windows as that means reinstalling a whole bunch of programs, etc. Anything out there that can help me fix this problem without reinstalling?
Thanks in advance....

Hey Tuneguy,You have a bunch of things you can try before you have to resort to reinstalling Windows. This is usually just a corrupted driver file.Do you have a Windows XP CD? If so, try putting the CD in the drive on bootup and entering the Recovery Console. Copy the Mup.sys file over to your harddrive. Alternately, although this also requires the XP CD, you can do a straight up Repair Install of XP that should fix that and any other corrupted or damaged files without resorting to a complete reformat/reinstallation, and having to reinstall all of your programs. I also found this article regarding the problem you are describing, Mouse related to Mup.sys Hang. It is certainly worth trying. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW

Hi, LGW.
Thanks for the reply. As it turns out, I think this must have been a hardware problem, because when I transplanted the hard drive (which had the copy of Windows that had been hanging on startup) to another computer , it started up with no problems in the new computer. So I'm guessing that whatever component of the old computer mup.sys or the following driver was trying to address must have been damaged. Just fyi, I tried doing a fresh install using a different hard drive on the computer that had been hanging on startup and could not successfully complete an installation (it kept hanging after literally hours or loading very, very slowly.) So again, this seems to point to a hardware issue, maybe on the motherboard, which has built in audio and video. Quite annoying, but as they say, no pain, no gain, I guess. Anyway, I did some research on my own, and this seems to be a rather common problem. There doesn't seem to be one simple answer. So what else is new. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Best, rf |

Hey Tuneguy,No problem, that's what we're here for. LOL. Did you try the mouse fix? I know it sounds wierd, but stranger things have worked. When you tried to install Windows on the new HDD, did it stop at the same place? I'm going to refer this one to our Tech Team Leader Garhar, he has a lot more hardware experience than I, and may have some other suggestions. You have done a memory test right? If not, just to make sure that isn't relevant, please run Memtest86. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW

Heya Tuneguy...
The last thing almost everyone checks and changes - is the IDE or SATA cable connecting to the drives to the board. It might be worth doing that, if it's copying extremely slowly - on both hard drive and cd drive. If that doesn't help - I'm going to point at the memory for now - most installation related problems for Windows XP are caused by faulty memory. If there is no error from doing Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page - try removing the memory sticks and getting a soft tipped eraser and rub the connectors (lightly) and try again. If there is an error - get the memory replaced.
