Hey there,
Since installing IE7 and WMP(Windows Media Player) 11 I seem to have lost all my icons for webpages and different sorts of media (mp3, wmv, etc)
I use Winamp most of the time for music, and Firefox for internet, when these are set to default browser and media player i just get the default blank looking windows icon. However when i change it back to WMP and IE as defaults the icons show up fine as the shiny looking ones that they're meant to.
I've tried reinstalling Firefox and Winamp to correct the problem, but to no avail. I've also tried cleaning the icon cache in the system32 folder, and gone to the extent of using TuneUp Utilites WinStyler to try and change the icons, but when veiwed within this program they show up as the proper Winamp and Firefox icons.
I've run out of ideas of how to fix this, the files still work fine, i just dont know whats a media file and whats a webpage.
I've put this in the XP part because i figured it was a Windows IE and WMP problem, sorry if i'm in the wrong place.
Thanks in advance.
Ben

Hey Ben,
Welcome to PCHF. In Windows Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, scroll down to "mp3", and click on Change, and select "Windows Media Player", and tick "Always use the selected program..", and click OK. If your icon still does not appear as it's supposed to, you can select the icon you want by clicking on Advanced, followed by Change Icon. |

Thanks for your help madmonkey.
I tried that, the icons show up fine when WMP is set as the default program, but if i change to using Winamp, Nero Showtime, RealPlayer or iTunes all the icons dissappear, when I view them in the way that you stated Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, scroll down to "mp3", and click on Change they show as the Winamp icon just fine, its only when browsing through explorer that they dont. I've also tried "advanced" followed by "change icon" to no avail. Do you have any other suggestions as to how i can get the icons to show? I've attached a screen shot of whats happening, it may make things a little clearer i hope, it shows the steps i previously followed. Thanks again. |

eh? From file types, you can delete the extension alltogether. Reboot. Go to your mp3 file and double click on it. It will ask you which program you want to use. You should be able to reselect Winamp again, and see if this solves your problem? Any idea what might have caused it? Something installed maybe?

Tried to remove it from the known file types list. Went to the standard WMP icon, then when i changed it back to being winamp as the default the icon reverted back to what was in the screenshot.
As i mentioned in my first post, this has come about since installing IE7 and WMP11, so i figure its something related to this, but i honestly have no idea. |

You removed it, and it reverted to WMP without asking? What should have happened is that the icon should have appeared like it did in the screenshot immediately after removing.
Did anything go wrong during the installation? And how were they installed, via Automatic Updates or via the Microsoft web site? |

Alot of people are having alot of problems with IE7, some people arent having any problems at all. The recommended installation procedure is to download it from MS website, turn off your av and firewall, shut down all running programs, and have nothing running but windows, and then install. From what im reading, most of the problems are occuring because IE 7 is getting installed via automatic updates with everything running , people that install manually with the recommended procedure are having fewer problems, but IE7 still has alot of bugs. I would suggest uninstalling it for now and go back to IE6 until they work the bugs out or you can research the problems youre having, and collect all the fixes before you reinstall. Heres a guide for the uninstall which is supposed to be trouble free, if you choose to do that. MS website also has info on the problems/fixes, and uninstalling.
EDIT: Sorry, forgot the guide, here it is. LOL Internet Explorer 7 |
