3 broad sets of lines across the top of the computer screen; lines are still present with new monitor; current monitor shows no lines when connected to
different computer. Possible causes?

The most probable cause, if you have ruled out monitor and monitor cable is the graphics card. First call would be to remove and then reseat the graphics card (as long is it's not onboard graphics).
