ey? It's a DOS program, how can it say that? I just tested on my test PC and it's works fine on there. Is this definetely the version I gave you? What program was used to extract it?

Chkdsk /f done, same error, 24 kb in corrupted sectors. I believe some files are not just damaged but gone, also that the hidden backup files are gone (should otherwise have been found and replaced during scan, shouldn´t they?). Ok, so here what I did. I took the hard disk out, placed it in a USB case, attached it to another computer, placed the CD into the CDROM (quit autostart), copyed the entire CD, placed the files in a new folder I named CDROM on the hard drive. Then, via Aviras NTFStoDOS, I typed C:\CDROM\I386\winnt.exe ....crossed my fingers and clicked enter. yay! brought me right into the installation program! But, it then asks me for SmartDrive which cannot be found on my computer (what is SmartDrive? Never heard of it before) I am given the option between quitting or continuing without SmartDrive. I choose to continue .... Next screen picture says (directly translated from Norwegian): The installation program cannot install the boot loader for windows. Control that drive C: is formated , and that the drive is not damaged. the installation program can not continue. press Enter to exit. Well, I was so happy for a few seconds.... Now what to do? What is SmartDrive and how do I get it and install it? I have a feeling that the solution is not too far away....just that i am too confused to see it. Will a re-installation erase all that is on the disk? why did the installation program ask if the hard disk was formatted? what to do now?..........

Hi Karin
You have the XP cd, I would seriously suggest getting a new cdrw drive.
Why?
What happens when you want to do a complete back-up to an external media?
[Scenario] You have a whole mess of pics, work files etc and just because the cdrom is cooked, your cooked.

Thanks Wolfeymole, I know and you´re so right ...in a way. But, the reason why i don´t is that is it a rather old computer, got 256MB RAM and lacks this and that .... I feel it would be too stupid to waste money on it when knowing I need a new in not oo long anyway. Son says it sounds like a helicopter :-D I have checked the prices and a new CDROM costs NOK 2000 (about 200 pounds. Guess i can have it for half of that if i go to England). I can get a new computer for 2,5 - 3 times that money. So, I will rather try keep it going for a little while more. being more spesific: get it up and running, allowing me to save email files to a safer drive, then use it for as long as it lasts and so buy a new
