Default Please help Hijack this problem

Hi all - I am new here and found this site through Hijack This. I have read a lot of posts and everyone seems so helpful. I hope someone can help me.
I used the Hijack This program on Nov 24th on my other computer and now I have a very big problem!
I thought I was being very careful about what problems I chose to "fix" - but apparently one of the items they said were "nasty" was also necessary. Now I can't connect to the internet with either Mozilla or Explorer. I get messages such as "Internet Explorer could not open the search page" or "Firefox can't find the server at..." I contacted Cablevision, (my internet provider - cable modem) and after confirming that I am connected and the modem is enabled, a test showed that no websites were receiving a "ping". The cablevision tech said something is corrupt and that I would have to contact my computer manufacturer - emachines. It seems to me I deleted whatever it is in my operating system - Windows XP - that communicates with webpages. I tried to restore to an early date, but I get a message that the system couldn't be restored because nothing was changed.
I just wondered if you have any idea what I might have deleted and how I could get it back. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Thank you very much wolfeymole. I am sorry I am just responding - been working some long days. I have not had an opportunity to try your suggestions. I am not sure how I am going to download the suggested programs to my other computer - since I can't connect to the internet on that one. Do you think I can download to a flash drive on this computer and then install on the other computer? I had hijackthis on the other computer, but uninstalled it and put it in the trash. I figured it caused my problems.
I really appreciate the help. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks very much again.
PS - I am looking for the thanks button - I don't se it. I feel like a real dummy

Hi again ksolar
You should have no problem putting the program on a flash drive, floppy or even burn it to a cdrom once downloaded, as the file is roughly 200kb in size.
