Default [Answered] Install problems (XP Pro)

Hi, I hope somebody can help me..

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-A497XP laptop that was given to me without any CDs. I have since purchased a copy of XP Pro, but cannot seem to install it. I have tried booting from CD, but after the screen displays "setup is inspecting your computer's hardware....." the screen goes blank and after a while, the laptop powers down.

If anyone has any ideas on a fix, I would be very greatful.
Best regards, Jay.

Welcome to PCHf jaybirch!

So the CD runs to start with and then the power goes down. have you set it to boot from CD-Rom first with the BIOS?

IT's going to be a really simple first response from me I'm afraid. Please give the CD a really good clean with a soft cloth and re-try.

Tried, I have also tried several different OS disks (xp, xp pro, 98 etc) All with the same problem. All legit copies too.

Thanks, Jay.

Aha! So, it may be time to try another CD rom drive.....

Also, can you run Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page and test the RAM fully.
