Default [Resolved] Data Migration on password protected hard drive

Greetings,

I know this seems silly but I am a PC-Technician for Circuit City. I've recieved an order for a "data migration" (To transfer data from an old hard drive to a new one) and I cannot copy the protected folders to the DVD, nor can they be accessed without being logged in. Is there a way to remove this password or bypass it?

Also, is there a way to run msconfig on this secondary sata drive? I think the reason why he can't log in is becuase he disabled explorer.exe for his startup programs. It does this in safe mode too, it'll log in and pop right back to the login screen. So if there's a way to do this without having to do a full data migration, I'd be thankful for an answer.

Thanks all, techs are always learning new things every day, no matter what.

This may seem simple, but did you call your customer and ask for the password?

Hi Brittany, welcome to the PC Help Forum.

You can actually do this really easy.

First can you tell me what operating system are you migrating from?

I feel a little dumb now that I've answered my own question, but I figured it out and got the job done about an hour after we closed. In explorer.exe I unchecked the Simple File Sharing box in the view options under tools. Then I right clicked on each folder and file and assigned ownership/read-write permissions to my name. After I went through and pegged every single file or folder like this, I finally copied it all over to a temp folder and burned a DVD of the data.

His laptop is locked up and undergoing system restoration as we speak.

I could not use his password that he provided becuase his system would not boot. I had to go in through our work computer and fish the data out of there, hence why there was no password prompt so to speak. I simply bypassed it with this method.

Sorry to have wasted your time.
