Whenever I boot my PC, those tasks run in the processes menu then before I can close them they disappear. They are somehow still hogging CPU space despite not being on the processes menu. Any way to keep them from running at startup besides using the msconfig method(those tasks don't appear on the list of tasks that can be stopped)?

Hi SushiCookie,
Welcome to PCHF. Are you on a domain or is this a standalone PC? |

If you go to My Computer, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Do you see a category called "Local Users and Groups"?
Have you tried disabling everything one by one in msconfig? They may not be appearing as regedit, net or net1, it sounds to me like a script, so it would appear under a different name, possibly ending with the extention .bat instead of .exe. Last edited by madmonkey; 11-24-2006 at 06:47 PM. |

There was no local users and groups category in the Computer Management box. I haven't tried doing the msconfig method but I don't want to hurt my PC so do you have any idea what I should be looking for?

Yep, check this out first:
- In the console tree, expand Local Users and Groups, and then click Users. - Click the user account that you want to work with. - Click Action, and then click Properties. - Click the Profile tab. - Under "logon script", make sure this is blank. - Click Apply, and then click OK. If not, it will be in msconfig, either under services or startup. Not a good idea to mess with services as most of the services are required for windows to operate. Startup programmes are generally things that have been installed since Windows XP was first installed, so temporarily stopping these programmes by unchecking them will only stop them from starting, and won't mess up your PC! |

Where is this local users and groups you are talking about? in your earlier post you said where to go but there are no local users and groups there.
