I'm off to purchase the xp disk to fix my pc but I was curious if it was ok to get windows xp home edition or do I have to get the xp pro (being it's the one installed on my pc). I'd rather get the home edition but if it'll conflict with installation, I'll just stick with the pro.

If you want to fix your PC then use the disk you got with the pc.

If youre going to reinstall all of your programs anyway, then just format the drive, and do a clean install of XP Home. You can format before install with a bootdisk, or partitioning tool, or let XP Home do it as it installs. Personally, on a clean install , i like to format first, and start with a clean drive.

I got my pc from a 3rd party that didn't have the restore disk and they seemed to have updated to xp pro from win 98. It's doing this constant rebooting thing and never loads to the log in page before it reboots again.
It was suggested to reinstall windows but being I didn't get any of the disks that came with the pc initially or a windows xp disk (i have windows 98 on my alternate pc which is the one i'm on now) I was hoping buying a copy of windows xp and installing it would replace whatever files might have been corrupted or deleted during a virus scan so it'll completely load. Is this wrong? I haven't gone to get the disk yet cause I was waiting on a reply first.. I don't really like asking too many questions while shopping cause sales people will tell you anything to get you to buy something and once the software is open you can't return it. |

Ok Dazed I didn't realise you had no disk, I should have asked (Wolfey reminds himself to slap himself later).
I would definately go for XP Pro against Home, it's more expensive but a lot better in terms of things like File Encryption etc. 98 to XP upgrade disks are just fit for ladies to look at while they powder their noses. Get XP Pro mate and do a completely brand new install.
