Hey there Jake welcome to Pchf ,

follow Microsoft's steps here

Optimize your computer for peak performance

it should speed up your Pc by quite alot,

also do some virus scan's with things like AVG, Adaware etc,

also read this guide here

How to Speedup and Secure your PC - JohnTP.com
.
You could also use a reg cleaner but i've had bad experiance's with them so i'll let someone else reccomend one .

For a freeware reg cleaner-- EasyCleaner

Official ToniArts software pages

I have used and recommended EasyCleaner for years. Never had a complaint due to it's use

For services config:

Windows XP Professional Services Tweaking

some of these won't be present in XP home... but it shows dependencies and 3 different setup types.

If you are going to adjust services-- read precautions and go slowly...!!
