Default [Answered] Windows XP Shut Down Problem.

Hello,

Recently my PC refuses to shut down if it has been on for more than 45 minutes. When I click Shut down it just stops and doesnt shut down, yet I can still move the mouse and go on applications etc. I have tryed a virus scan and nothing came up so I am a little confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hey ch_123!

Can you try this (when normal shutdown doesn't work):

Click 'Run' in the Start Menu, type 'command', and click OK.

Type ' shutdown -s -t 20 ', press enter.

Close the Command window then, and check if your computer shuts down after 20 seconds.

Hi there,

What happens when I do that is that a box comes up saying the application failed to initiate because the windows station is shutting down. However it keeps freezing after this still.

Some of your power options settings could have changed for some reason, ...power failure, power surge, improper shutdown, a glitch in windows...ect. Have a look in: control panel>Power options>Power options properties>Advanced>Power buttons: Make sure it is set to (When i press the power button on my computer>Shut down: Click , Apply>OK, and exit. Depending on your bios, there may be settings there also that affect shutdown.
