Default [Resolved] Windows Xp Crash - Upgrade To W98se !

Hello everyone !
My IBM 390X running XP Pro crashed and I only have a Windows 98SE
disk Can I replace the operating system using the disc ?
I have inserted the CD Rom disk, but unfortunately there is
insufficient space on the hard drive in orded to load W98 SE.
Does anybody know how to delete some of the files from DOS to allow
a W98 SE installation. Also, will the installation retain my old data ( mainly
image files ? ) Any advice gratefully received ! KRs Pete

Hi Pete 99, you can visit this link if you wish, to help solve your problem. Do you definatly want to downgrade to "Windows 98SE"? If not i think this link is for recovering your notebook

Hi Pete

Welcome to PCHF

You couldn't load 98 anyway as it would detect you have XP and not allow you as "There is a newer Operating System already installed"
If you want to re-install 98 then you will need a boot floppy disk available from the link in my signature and obviously the 98 cd.
If you need to know how to re-install then get back to us.

Thankyou madgamer and wolfeymole !
A further question if I may ...back to basics - the original error
on the Laptop running XP is a blue screen showing Unmountable_Boot_Volume - how would I recover from that ? Any ideas please ?

Thanks Pete

9 times out of 10 the reason you get that message is because your boot.ini file is corrupted so you have 2 choices;
1 Repair XP using the XP disk
2 Install 98 after fdisking and wiping the hard drive.

Thanks to both of you. For the record, and for the benefit of anyone who comes across a similar problem...the solution was
either to buy a Windows XP Disk - and reboot the old computer or use my Windows 98SE Disk ....
1) I extracted all my personal image/home video files onto a 1gb
memory stick from the crashed IBM 390X ( using a self booting
do-it-all PC Repair anything CD bought on ebay for a few pounds.
This had numerous file recovery programs so I could transfer
files onto the Memory stick.)
2) Transferred all these files from the stick to my working laptop.
3) As the crashed laptop still had XP files on it, it would have prevented me loading up Windows 98SE, so, again using the do it all PC repair CD, I selected a program that formatted the hard disk, then I
4) Loaded up Windows 98SE on the crashed laptop.
Now I've got two working LAPTOPS nicely running W98SE !
A bit of a crazy fix, but it saved me buying a Windows XP cd !
Thanks to all ! Pete

So your saying that you used that "super duper repair anything disk" to install the image file on to the 2 laptops and then installed 98 on both yes?
