Question [Answered] I.E. 7.0 installation

Help needed please re installing IE 7.

I have Windows XP Professional SP2, purchased with a new computer earlier this year.
The current version of IE is 6.0.2900.2180.

Whilst generally preferring Firefox (I am currently using 1.5.0.8) there are quite a number of instances where IE has to be used.

I am therefore considering getting IE 7.0 which (like FF and Netscape 7 before that) now, I understand, at last has tabbed browsing and won't cut off the page on printing - amongst other things.

However from looking around various web sites it seems that during installation it is necessary to disable anti-virus software since this could adversely affect the installation.

Is this indeed the case? If so is it really advisable to do this with broadband? Is there an alternative procedure for installing IE 7.0 whilst keeping anti-virus software active?

Derek Shaw.

Hi DerekShaw,

Welcome to The PCHF,

You should be able to install ie7 by bringing down your AV etc, but only for the duration of the setup, start them up straight away to be safe
You can download the file and install it while disconnected from the internet to minimise any risk, the site is here
If you want, there is an extension that you can download for firefox that lets you see sites that need IE to run, I use it for Win Updates, the site is here.
Let us know how you get on

On another note, Firefox 2.0 has been released (not as an automatic update).

Yes, I am aware of this but investigating on the Mozilla Firefox forum indicates that a lot of people are having problems with it, especially regarding incompatible extensions, so I intend to wait a bit with this.

I will investigate the Firefox extension but I am quite prepared to use IE where needed. It also seems that a lot of people are having problems getting IE 7.0 to work. If I choose to proceed with the update I can at least keep my virus-scanner operative for the download. I also understand from the Microsoft update page that if I would so wish IE 7.0 can be uninstalled - presumably thus reverting to version 6.

You could if you wanted to, create a restore point before you download and install IE7 and if you don't like it, roll back to before the install.
The restore point can be accessed through the help and support in the start menu or F1, click on "undo changes to your computer through system restore" and choose to create a restore point.
let us know what you decide to do

Using a restore point is always a good idea before installing, updating or (especially?) uninstalling software. I have just recently made exactly the same recommendation to someone on the Mozilla forum regarding upgrading to Firefox and when I get round to trying both the IE7 and Firefox 2 'upgrades' will certainly do the same - but I think it will be a little while before I can find the time to concentrate on either.

It would perhaps also be a good to hang on for a little while and look in forums to see what problems others are having and how they solve them, especially as everything is working fine with my present setup at the moment.
