Question [Fixed] staying alive...

Hello there,
I'm experiecing a weird -I think- problem with my PC. It won't shut down or restart through windows. It logs off and stays in " writing unsaved data to disk " with hard drive idle (after a few seconds of disk activity). Shut it down manually, tried again, the same situation. Left it off-power for a while, sitll nothing.
I was keeping it on for days, downloading stuff with Azureus, and one day, trying to shut it down, it wouldn't. I experienced this problem before, when I forgot to close my internet connection. But now thats not the issue. Fixed registry, deactivated all other installed connections, nothing seems to work.
Help!!!!

Hello Pandektis, welcome to PCHF.

Freezes during this time could actually be caused by absolutely anything from hardware and driver incompatibility, to a program or service running in the background that refuses to shut down, to malware even.

Have you installed any new hardware or software during the time your problem started?

Have a look at what programmes are starting up:
- Go to Start, Run, and type msconfig.
- Click on the Startup tab

You can try and disable each on of these one by one to see if your problem goes away. Click on the tick box next to the program to stop it from starting, and then put a tick back if you do want that program to start.

SHUTDOWN HANGS ON “SAVING YOUR SETTINGS”

During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the “saving your settings” screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be intermittent. This is a known bug in Windows XP, for which Microsoft has a supported fix. To learn how to get this patch, see MSKB 307274, “Windows XP Stops Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown.” The necessary patch is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1, and also is now available on the Windows Update site under “Recommended Updates” for Win XP Professional, titled “Restarting Windows XP.” However, to find it, you may need to reconfigure how Windows Update appears for you, by enabling the Windows Update Catalog as follows: At the Windows Update page, click Personalize Windows Update at the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. Save your settings. This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box. Click this link, then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems. Pick Windows XP in the drop-down list, click Search, take Recommended Updates, and find the “Restarting Windows XP” patch which references Q307274.
As a workaround, newsgroup correspondent “lou” resolved this problem by dismantling the Windows XP logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts, then click “Change the way users log on or off.” Uncheck the box that says “Use the Welcome screen.” This removes the initial logon screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.
This may fix the problem...

Thank you all guys- I tried all of your advice, but it seems that the problem was something else -some program perhaps. I fixed it with a system restore (although i don't like it much- have to install recent programs again). I think that maybe Google Desktop did it- because I didn't give it the time to make a full index, but then I'm not sure.
Thanx to you all !!!!!!!!
