A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer

An attempt was made to execute Non-Executable memory

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed
If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any new updates you might need

If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software, Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

Hi Paul, welcome to the pchf! Sorry about the delay in replying to your post.

It appears as if your memory is having some issues. To confirm this, can you please download and run Memtest86 - Memory Diagnostic Page

I had a similar problem recently. I tried to install a program called Alcohol 120% which can create virtual drives, but the setup program crashed and I kept getting the "An attempt was made to execute Non-Executable memory" message every timeI rebooted. I think the setup program was still trying to install in the background and was draining all the resources.

Anyway I got over it by disabling the DEP function. (Data Execution Prevention). After I had done that I was able to boot up and uninstall it.

If you try disabling it then you should be able to get back into your PC and try and find out what is causing the problem. Check any programs that you have recently installed or roll back any new drivers to there previous state. If you can't find anything obvios the check out your IDE drivers. If they are anything other than the original Microsoft ones try reverting back to them.

If you find the problem you can always turn DEP back on again, but Windows survived ok without it before SP2 so you will probably be ok to leave it off.

I hope that is of some help

Disable DEP as follows:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Under Pick a category, click Performance and Maintenance.
  3. Under or Pick a Control Panel icon, click System.
  4. Click the Advanced tab, and in the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings.
  5. In the SystemStartup area, click Edit.
  6. In Notepad, click Edit and then click Find.
  7. In the Find what field, type /noexecute and then click Find Next.
  8. In the Find dialog box click Cancel.
  9. Replace the policy_level (for example, "OptIn" default) with "AlwaysOff" (without the quotes).

WARNING: Be sure to enter the text carefully. Your boot.ini file switch should now read:

    /noexecute=AlwaysOff
  10. In Notepad, click File and then click Save.
