Default Freezing after installing AOL

Hi guys and thanks in advance.

I was recently asked to look at a PC that kept freezing. My friend said the problem occured after installing his NetGear WG111v2 USB wirless adapter and the AOL 9.0 software.

After running AVG, SBs&D, and Reg Mechanic the problem was still there. I took the PC away and did a complete format and re-install of Windows. I reinstalled the adapter and tested in on my network at home. The PC did not freeze at all and I had it on all day and was putting it under quite a lot of stress by installing multiple programmes at the same time.

I took it back to my friend's and put the AOL software back on. After a lot of messing about (had to diable the NetGear software from loading so that WZC was the wireless controller - wouldn't work otherwise) I thought the problems had been solved. However he has just rang and said it is freezing again so it must be AOL as I had no such problems.

I know he has an AMD processor but not much else at the time of posting, please let me know exaclt what else you might need to help me with this.

Once again, thanks

Hi estebanrey, welcome to the pchf!

Did you have the side of the case open while you were reinstalling windows at all?

Hello estebanrey,

Welcome to PHF.

I particularly dislike AOL. I don't think I've known one person using AOL that hasn't had a problem with. You could try using a previous version of AOL, but I would definately recommend using a differnent ISP. AOL support is particularly bad, and you even have problems removing the software completely from you PC after.

This is true.

When AOL tried to make an entrance to Australia about....oh around 10 years ago now...they offered everyone 1 free month...and i think only about 20 ppl in my high school signed up for that free month. AOL = devil.

No, I read that it may be a hardware problem but thought I wait until I saw how the reinstall wnet before I started probing the tech. As it was fine I didn't bother as I assumed problem solved. Also he never had this problem until he tried ti get on AOL wireless.

P.S I know AOL are rubbish (that's why im with f2s) but the guy is a friend of a friend and I don't feel confident about advising him to cancel his new contract
