I have recently installed this sony dvdrw awg170a DVD drive and its using the drivers from the old DVD rom drive i have on the pc. Shouldnt the drivers be on the drive and windows use them automatically? I have tried searching for the drivers on the net but cant find anything. I have the new sony drive set by the jumpers on the rear as slave, is that correct?.

Hey sbowler!
Is the drive not recognized in Device Manager too? Also, does the drive show up in your BIOS? You can enter your BIOS tapping F2, or Del at start-up. Blue |

Tnx for the quick response Bluefish. Yes its there in device manager, its listed right under my original dvd rom drive, the thing is there using the same driver. and the new drive is described as a dvd/cd rom drive. how can two seperate drives use the same driver. I have written music files to cd with it but sonic writing software says no rewritable drives detected.

Oke can you post a screenshot of that part of device manager?
I guess there's just a standard DVD player driver in XP. They have different letters though? Are you able to use your burner through Nero or Windows burn system? Blue |

Oke if the 2 drives are on the same cable, make sure you set the player Master, and the Burner Slave.
EDIT: Oh and, what does Diskmanager provide you? You can go there right-clicking 'My computer', click 'Manage', click 'Computer management' -> Disk management. Last edited by Bluefish; 10-09-2006 at 01:08 PM. |

OK have the original drive set to master, I have had the Sony set to slave and have just tried cable select, which is what the dvd writer that I have replaced was set to. Same prob. using same drivers the date on the original dvd rom drive is for july 2001 . Now the sony has a manufacturing date on it as august 2006. Its as though the Sony has been shipped without any drivers. can I download the drivers from anywhare? or do I ship it back for a replacement?
