Default number of running processes

When I open up the task manager on my pc it says that there are 40 processes running and that is without any applications opened. Can that be right? How many processes should be running? Is there anyway I can run only the processes that I need in order to improve performance?
Thanks

That all depends on what you have installed. Things such as Anti-virus programs and firewalls that are running in the background are all counted, even though you may not see them.

I myself have 37 processes running. If you are not experiencing any trouble, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you are having any problems, such as a slow computer, let me know and we can help you with that.

if your pc is running slow just close all programs opened by your account... and only leave running explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe.... but dont mess with the system or other services just close the programs opened when you open your account on XP and it should speed up.. if not then maybe there is a virus running in your pc disguised as a System program.. in that case formatting your is the best option... those kind of viruses are hardly found by Antivirus
