Thanks for the information about appwiz.cpl. Next question, can this file be removed and replaced with the one from the install CD? And if possible will it update from the registry to reflect installed programs, windows updates and quick fixes?

I do not really know, as I have never had to remove it and then replace as you are wanting to do. I cannot see any reason why the program listing would not be there after you replaced it...

Is it that you are having an issue with it. Then it might be best to use "system file checker" This will repair the windows system files back to original condition.

You will need to use your original microsoft xp installation disc. Insert the CD and stop it from opening. then go to start > run ...and in the dialogue box type

"SFC /scannow"

without the quotations and please notice the space between the C and / then
press enter. It will take it about 10 or so minutes depending on your system specs.

I've seen this scan take over an hour with the amount of files that needed to be replaced
