Hi Radion, welcome to the forums.

Have you tried reinstalling your codecs?

I know that some dvds require certain decoder packs supplied by microsoft or other companies to work.

Can you confirm if the dvd plays in other programs (such as PowerDVD) or other dvds work?

Dear GaRHaR,

Thanks for your quick reply.

I'm pretty much a beginner with computers so I have no idea what codecs are and how to reinstall my codecs. If you can tell me the procedure, I'd appreciate it. I tried running dvd's from Nero DVD Player (part of Nero 6) and had no problem doing so but no matter what DVD I put in Drive D (my DVD player driver), I just get a black screen with no sound. I have to hit Ctrl/Alt/Del to get out of it and get an error message when I do ("Application has generated an exception that cannot be handled".) Also, I just noticed that I can run dvd's from my Drive E, which is my dvd writer drive. I don't know if this helps but I'm running Windows Xp Media Edition.

Thanks for your help and any other suggestions.

Ron

HI Ron, do you know what video card you are using?

If you right click on your Desktop and select Properties
and then click on Settings it should tell you in there just under the picture of the monitor.

Hi GaRHar,
Just checked. It's a Radeon X300 Se Series video card. Hope this helps.

Dear GaRHar,
Just some additional information that might help. When I put in a DVD and open "Media Player", I click on "Play DVD". When I do that, a Blue Box comes on the left side of the screen saying "Decoder Error". Then the screen turns black and freezes. I then have to hit ctrl/Alt/Del to get out. I did a little more research and it said that my codecs might be missing or corrupted so I ran a microsoft program called "Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility". That shows 4 decoders, all of which are X'd out.
These are Roxio MPEG2Video Encoder/ Roxio MPG2 Video Encoder/ Roxio DVD MPG2 Decoder and Roxio SVCD MPG2 Decoder. It gives you the option and selecting these 4 codecs as the ones to be used and it also says on the bottom of the screen that "the dvd Decoder installed in my Windows XP computer is not compatible awith Windows Media Player 10 and Windows XP Medication Center Edition." I then downloaded Windows codecs- WM9Codecs.exe and installed them; however, when I ran the checkup Utility it only showed the same 4 Roxio codecs, not the Windows codecs and the problem still exists. So that's where I am at this time. It seems like I have the answer to the problem but I can't figure out how to keep the Windows codecs installed and how to select them. I'd appreciate any further help you can give me in solving this problem.

Ron
