Default problems with setting up a Wireless network

Hey all.

Ok, im having issues with setting up a wireless network. i will start with what i do have, and end with the probems.

Ok, i have a belkin wireless router and a laptop with a wireless network card. the router used to be in another house and dished out wireless internet fine..

under the 195.644.242 etc etc "thing" in my favourites page i have the "Belkin wireless adsl modem router setup utility". I have, written down, the big long security network key that worked fine in the old house. (it hasnt changed with the move)

Also i am connecting fine through the main pc that is conected directly to the router/phone line.

Ok, the problem.

I thought "oh this will be easy i will just enter the network key into the laptop when requsted to do so" but all i get is "limited connectivity/no connection"...... AHHHH

If it helps. i reckon i need to set up the router to allow the laptop access ( i have absolutely no idea how to do this but if it helps the belkin utility setup thing has the following headers down the left hand side: LAN SETUP, INTERNET WAN, WIRELESS, FIREWALL, UTILITIES)

what do i do.......

Thanks for any advice/help

Ok, first of all is this a new laptop?

If so laptops have a switch/button which disables the wireless network untill activated (a safety feature for turnign laptops on on planes).

Unfortunatly its located in diferent places on each laptop. Inspect your laptop it is highly likly it will have a switch for wireless. Find that and all is well.

Failing this, network keys are CaSe SeNsItIvE. If you know how computers work we dont use aski no more but for an example. i think A = 25 and a = 48 or somthing like that. So when you put in the code AAA your sayins 25*25*25. Where as aaa is 48*48*48 (actually dont think its 48 but still) if you understand. Make sure you enter the key correctly it is possible you coudl of copied it in lower case when its upper or somthing.

Failing this you need to set your recieve to the SAME code type. I mean your AP could be using WEP. Where as your computer may be using TKIP. If you need more details on to check this ask.

If you still having problems let me know and will give it more thought. But they are the most common errors.

Oh your laptop is within the range of the AP and its turned on right? partoniseing i know but i know people who dont think of that.

Hey, firstly thanks for ur reply.

o.k, pretty certain the key is being inputted correctly as im doing exactly the same thing as last year when it worked.

The laptop can connect to another unsecured wireless network that i can see when i "refresh wirelss netowrks" so the laptop can/is turned on to receive Wireless network banter.

Another thing and i dont know if its related, the internet on my main pc is well well slow, i.e should be 1mb and is nearer 130k, also it cant connect to its own network (if that makes any sense, i.e its connected to the router but cant connect to the network that the router is sending, again i try and get told limited/no connectivity)

Thanks for any advice
