Question [Fixed] Fresh XP/MCE install won't accept '05 update

Hi folks,

New kid on this block with, go figure, an XP issue as soon as it is installed.

I just bought (legally and everything!) an OEM version of XP Media Center Edition from Tiger Direct. It has two CDs that install the 2004 version, and a third CD that has a 'self-executing' 2005 update.

Because it is an OEM item, no install instructions are included, but after deleting/creating the C: partition and formatting it, the 2 '04 CDs went in relatively painlessly.

But no clue is provided on how the third disc is installed. I inserted it after a fresh reboot and a window opens showing the lone file on the disc. Double-clicking it starts it copying files, seemingly to my auxiliary E: HDD (why E: ??). Then it seems to try and run an installation process but errors-out with the following popup:

"MC Installer.exe - Unable to locate Component

This application has failed to start because SRCLIENT.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

...which, of course, does not fix it. It just repeats the error.

I looked at the E: drive to see what was copied there (in case an installer was placed there), but nothing at all was put there.

Any help?

Hi jwramc, welcome to the PCHF!

Download this file here...
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dl...shtml?srclient
and follow the instructions of the .txt file in the ZIP file that you download.

Good luck and let us know how you go/if there's any more problems.

Exclamation

Hehehe..."IF" there are anymore problems? It's Microsoft!

Thanks for the link...but...

...as expected, now I get this one-

".NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 must be installed before you can continue with the update to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Please go to Windows Update to install the required software and then try again."

Gotta love this s**t. The system isn't online yet...I'm still installing the OS!

I should point out that as the 2nd install CD was nearing the end of the install, a pop-up requested I insert my XP Professional SP2 CD...which I do not own and never have. Why on Earth would I need a 2nd OS to install the first???

Should've stuck with the ol' 'Borrow your pal's CD' method. I'd still have these issues but I'd still have my $115, too. (Can you smell the frustration??)

I certainly can!

I've never actually installed MCE before so I'm not too sure where to go from here.

Perhaps one of the other techs can help you out a bit further.

So you are trying to update to MCE 2005, but 2004 isn't fully installed yet? If MCE 2004 isn't fully installed then I would start looking for the problem there.

You could get it here, and then copy it on a cd or flashdrive ect. to the other pc:

Download details: .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package

Have you tried inserting cd1 again? It is probably asking for that I think.

Ok, I'll frag this install and reinstall yet again.

As before, tho, XP MCE 04, disc 1 will install fine. Then disc 2 will seem to install fine until near the end, and it will ask for a XP Pro SP2 CD. For the sake of this experiment, I'll put disc 1 back in, tho I expect it'll be rejected and the same request for XP Pro will be repeated. Stay tuned...

I'm DLing the .NET EXE for use after the expected repeat of the prior issues, just in case. Thanks.

OK, disc 1 nearing it's end. Progress bar indicates 'Copying Files' after displaying 'Installing Network'. Now 27 minutes to go...and 'Windows XP Professional CD2' is requested...which must be XP MCE CD2 (I guess MS couldn't spare the few pennies to have a programmer fix that text)...inserted CD2 and it auto-continued...

OK, progress bar indicates 'Installing Start Menu Items' and a pop-up now requests 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD'...which again, I do not have. As suggested, I put MCE's disc 1 back in...and the install is auto-continuing!?! WTF is THAT about!?? Neither disc has any mention that SP2 is included on them. Man, if this works, I'm going to Bill's next public appearance and bringing a sledgehammer.

Now registering components....

[Man, good thing I have this laptop...I'd be suicidal by now!]
