Hello everyone, this is a post in response to Spaceman3750 post about computer maintenance:
Weekly
Defragment your hard drive (Is that a good idea? I was told doing that wears down your HD)
Monthly
Run Disk cleanup
Empty your recycle bin (emptying it everyday is not good?)
Empty your temporary files (emptying it everyday is not good?)
Empty prefetch folder (whats this? and where can I find it?)
About the emtpy recycle bin and temporary files...I use a program called windows washer and it does those two things for me automatically when ever I close internet explorer. So is that a good idea to be doing them both everyday?

What regclean program do you guys on this site use?
Also curious...what's the best anti virus program / spyware program. The ones that you pay for, not the free ones.

I run Diskeeper which monitors and defrags your harddrive automatically-- it usually runs (in the background) once a day...modern HD's are designed to run constantly for years-- mine's five years old. What you do really makes no significant difference.

I run disc cleanup daily
I empty temp files everyother day -- more if I feel it necessary.
I don't empty prefetch-- there are 2 schools-of-thought on any benefit from this ... 1 for/1 against. I leave it alone.
Window Washer's a great program-- I'd leave it's setting as/is.

For AV I run AVG pro on my main machine

Panda Platinum Pro on my kids puter

Antispyware: I run Spybot/Adaware/PestPatrol
Ewido is highly recommended here by all the Security Team. I have always used/recommended a multipronged defense for spyware-- there is SO MUCH of it now.
...and because a program is paid for does not guarantee it is "better". Spybot is one of the best apps out there-- it is supported by donations financially, and by a very good team, and probably MILLIONS of users all over the globe. It is highly respected-- as are it's writers. ihave run it for years-- and it has saved my bacon many times.
