Unhappy Continued display problems

Unfortunately, my problems with XP continue. In spite of having recently reloaded / updated my video drivers, I am again unable to get any video on my monitor upon a regular startup. I can get normal video if I start in safe mode. Sometimes starting in VGA mode will work, then I can change to hi resolution and work. I can hibernate my PC and continue with no problem, but if I have to restart for any reason, my video is gone. Upon startup, the usual windows logo comes up with the little progress bar at the bottom, but as soon as that is finished I have a black screen.
I'm totally perplexed.
Any ideas?

Hi,

Can you go into Windows via safe mode and uninstall your graphics adapter in Device Manager. Re-boot and see if Windows will re-install the best driver for you.

Thanks. Tried it, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I noticed, however, that in the display properties it lists my monitor as the default hardware rather than my specific monitor. I thought I'd try to install a different driver, but it won't let me make any changes (because of safe mode?). One more thing- I mentioned before that I could startup in VGA mode, but that is no longer true.
Any further ideas?
Kento

Well, I tried it again and guess what-- it seems to be working alright. If that changes, I will, of course be in touch...

In the meantime, thanks again! btw, how the heck do you guys find the time to help so many people?

hmmm... It seems that every time I shut down and restart my PC my video drivers mysteriously disappear and I am forced to reinstall the drivers. If I standby or hibernate it'll start right up. It seems that the file being updated is in the windows folder, called 'nvcpl.exe'. Know anything about that?

I remain mystified.

nvcpl.exe should stand for Nvidia Control Panel...but from what i've just read, it's most likely a virus

Follow the prework link in my signiture, and we'll see if we can determine what it is.

I've finally done the pre-work, etc. and I posted the results in the hijack this section under "Log help... a continuation of previous thread".
Not sure what to do next...
